Mintoss / Lure fishing

How to skip cast a frog into mangrove pockets

I shorten the line drop, keep my cast low and control the release to get my Mintoss Skip Frog into shaded mangrove pockets.

How to skip cast a frog into mangrove pockets

When I skip cast, I want the lure to reach a small opening without turning the whole bank into a rescue mission. I start with control. Distance can come later.

Pick the opening before making the cast

In this session, I target gaps beneath overhangs and between root clumps. The water is rising, bait is moving along the edge, and shade gives the fish somewhere to sit.

I look for a clear entry and a workable path back out. A pocket with an opening is a better practice target than the thickest tangle on the bank. Getting a lure in is only half the job.

Keep the lure close to the rod tip

I start with about 30 centimetres of line outside the tip, or less. Too much hanging line lets the lure swing around and makes the release harder to repeat.

I shorten that drop before each cast. On spinning gear, I use a finger at the spool to control the release and slow or stop the cast. Practise that control in open water before aiming near branches.

Think of skipping a stone

The cast needs a low approach across the surface. I bring the rod across my body and release as it points towards the opening. A steep downward cast tends to drive the lure into the water rather than send it across it.

Do not solve every short cast with more force. If the lure digs in, check the angle and line drop first. If it flies upward, make a smaller, more controlled motion and try again.

Follow the lure with the rod

As the frog skips in, I lift the rod to help keep loose line off the water. It is a small follow-through, timed with the lure’s travel. I want to control the line without pulling so hard that I stop the cast early.

Build accuracy in stages

  1. Practise beside an open bank with no overhead cover.
  2. Repeat short casts at one visible target.
  3. Add spool control so you can stop at the target.
  4. Move to a generous overhang before trying narrow pockets.

Even experienced anglers snag up in mangroves. Good target selection and repeated controlled casts reduce the unnecessary ones. Watch the full demonstration to see the rod movement and release timing together.
